DESCRIPTION: A rosette gall that forms a compacted head of up to 40 deformed and thickened leaves. The petioles are reduced and numerous reddish or greenish outgrowths appear on the surface of the leaves. Within the vegetative cluster numerous red, legless larvae feed which fall to the ground when fully grown whereupon they pupate. There can be up to 3 generations a year. DISTRIBUTION: Frequent. Best from June until October although old galls are persistent. HABITAT: On leaves of hawthorn bushes particularly those found in hedgerows.
